In early September I look forward to Autumn, the rusty leaves, the sharp sunshine and the amazing sunsets. By early November I am grumpy. The nights draw in, it rains too much and I find myself eating a bit too much chocolate. This is also the time when I start brightening up my cooking and baking – adding more chilli to curries, extra garlic to sauces and summery flavours to my baking. (more…)

I try to pretend that banana bread is a valid breakfast food, especially if sprinkled with oats or nuts, but in this case adding chocolate firmly puts banana bread into the cake category. This is one of the best ways of making chocolate cake, you get squidgy-ness from the bananas and a beautiful crisp top, much like a brownie. If we’re calling it bread you could even slice it up and serve it with nutella. Just a suggestion.
As soon as the air gets a bit cooler I tend to bake an apple cake, and complain about how it is cold yet too soon to put the heating on. This apple cake is good central heating, at least. This recipe is for Gemma, who runs a fantastic local cafe and shop, The Linton Kitchen. She asked me about this recipe after I posted a picture on Instagram. In the last month or so we have moved in to our first home (no more landlords!), I started a lovely new job in the heart of Cambridge and we’ve enjoyed a fabulous long weekend in Dublin. I made these brownies after we’d unpacked the essentials and my bigger, new kitchen was screaming bake something!
Sticky toffee brownies are the best a way to christen a new pad! The smell of baking certainly makes a house feel like home, and taking a break from unpacking to melt chocolate, weigh flour and set a kitchen timer was much appreciated. (more…)
I love cheese, and I’ve very much enjoyed the resurgence that British cheeses have had recently. We have some excellent home grown cheesemakers that are making it easier and easier to find fantastic cheese on our doorstep.
The Cheese Market, an online artisan cheese shop, contacted me recently to ask me to review their cheese, which I was delighted to do, especially having seen the selection their website! (more…)
