Review: Jamie’s Pizzeria, Cambridge

Jamie Oliver’s never been one to shy away from an announcement, yet the pizzeria arm of his massive Jamie’s Italian empire appears to have arrived fairly quietly. It opened around a year ago, I think, and the entrance is tucked away behind the huge Jamie’s Italian building in the centre of the city. Perched at the top of the building, the smoky smell of the pizza oven whets your appetite as you climb the stairs. (more…)

Sweet potato, ginger and coconut soup

sweet potato soup-001
I’d like to think we are now reaching the end of soup season, as the temperatures start to move into the teens, but in all likelihood we’ve still got another 6 weeks or so of soup eating to go. (more…)

Pistachio, almond & honey cakes

pistachio cakeI’ve been in a bit of baking rut recently, I think it is okay to admit this. I’ve made a strangely savoury batch of granola bars, and a stranger tray of baked oatmeal that was akin to an oaty omelette. There was a brownie failure which actually turned into some pretty good molten chocolate puddings, but not brownies. I did manage to pull off a tasty rhubarb cake for cake club last month, but it was a stressful experience!

Cupcakes, fairy cakes, buns, muffins or whatever you prefer to call them, are a good way to get your baking mojo back. They are quick to mix and speedy to bake, with less worrying about undercooked middles when you bake a large cake. (more…)

Squash & Coconut Daal (Vegan)

squash and coconut daal-002I can’t leave a recipe alone. It is rare that I will follow a recipe to the letter, I suppose I am stubborn and believe I know better. If a chocolate cake recipe stipulates caster sugar then I know dark muscovado will give it a better taste. I am right though, aren’t I? With savoury food I will nearly always change the spices and herbs based upon what I think is better, or what is in the cupboard. Like I said, I’m stubborn.

This is not usually the case for recipes childhood. You’ll find me hard pressed to change how my Mum makes chicken curry and it is out of the question to add something different to the classic rotli which it is eaten with (whole spices? add garlic? not a chance).

The other night I did fancy messing with my usual recipe for tuwar daal though, I had a big squash and a craving for a coconut-based daal, so I decided it wouldn’t be so bad to break with tradition. Just don’t tell my Mum, OK? (more…)

Chocolate stout loaf cake

chocolate stout loaf cake-002
This is a chocolate cake with a serious amount of squidge to it, it is a chocolate brownie, cake and pudding hybrid. Everyone went a bit mad for it over on Instagram when I posted a picture pre-baking, so it had to go on the blog! (more…)
